Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning

Olsen Avenue Community Children Centre encourages children to be curious thinkers by developing a programme that brings curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder into their world!

Our curriculum is child initiated, built on the Curiosity Approach. It’s a modern-day approach to early childhood, taking parts from Reggio, Steiner, Te Whāriki and a sprinkle of Montessori. This approach fits perfectly into our world today as it nurtures creativity, curiosity, play and problem-solving. Curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder encourage our children to be the ‘thinkers and go-getters’ of our future.

Our educational play spaces are inviting and purposeful, rich with learning and self exploration, creating an environment that is worthy of the children’s immense capabilities. We draw on the child’s voice and the family’s input, to design spaces that are flexible and inclusive, sparking curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder. We trust that by developing an appreciation of the natural world and instilling sustainable practices, we grow a generation of Earth’s caregivers for years to come.

At OACCC every child has a voice! As Educators we support the children to develop a sense of well being and belonging within our setting by fostering a sense of community. Our educator’s curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder creates a friendly natural space for the children to learn, grow and explore. We as educators advocate for the children’s rights and act in the best interest of the children and their families.

Our educators are warm, caring, and passionate about early education. We practice happy, positive role modelling through play. Genuine curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder develop not only the child’s connections and understating of the world they live in but allows us as educators to be the best version of ourselves. Critical reflection facilitates every aspect of the children’s day and as staff work collaboratively to enhance and extend each child as we endeavour to give all children the support and guidance they need to grow and become happy confident young people of our future.

We believe that families are the children’s first and most influential teachers, we respect and value their culture and beliefs and draw on their knowledge to develop and contribute to our Curiosity approach. We believe that growing meaningful partnerships with families allows us to reflect on what family means to each child and we nurture the important relationship that exists between them.

All members within our service recognise diversity as a strength and work closely with people within our community to cultivate an atmosphere of inclusiveness as we broaden the children’s understanding of the world, they live in. We recognise the traditional owners, the people of the Yugambeh language group of the Bundjalung Nation, on whose land we have the privilege to live and work each day. We believe curiosity, imagination, awe and wonder impacts the world around us, promoting our community spirit.
